Address Numbering
Carroll County requires address numbers on new construction to be displayed using 3" high numerals for residential occupancies and 6" numerals for non-residential and multi-family occupancies. The number must be displayed on the address side (usually the front) of the building in such a manner so that EMS, fire, and police personnel can quickly find a location where help is needed. Where numbers on a building cannot be seen from the roadway, the entrance way should be posted with signs showing the address number; numbers on mailboxes are often too small to be seen and are not as effective as larger reflective signs that can be seen by emergency responders coming from any direction. Spelling out an address (e.g. One Hundred Thirty Seven) on a building is not recommended; simple numerals are much easier to read.
Reference Carroll County building code section on display of address numbering:
Section 3700.1. Single family detached or attached residential structures shall display, facing the street, numerals at least 3 inches in height designating the address assigned to the structure by the Bureau of Permits and Inspections. Nonresidential or multifamily residential structures shall display, facing the street and at all entrances facing parking areas, numerals at least 6 inches in height designating the address assigned to the structure by the Bureau of Permits and Inspections. All address displays shall be posted on contrasting background displayed in a conspicuous place and in a manner as to be clearly visible from the nearest street, except that displays required at entrances facing parking areas shall be clearly visible from such parking areas.
Several local fire companies have junior firefighter programs that sell reflective signs as a fund raiser to support their programs. Contact Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association for more information.
