Recycling - Reduce
Create less trash!
Buy only what you need.
Avoid buying over-packaged products.
Buy concentrated products (fabric softeners, detergents, soft drinks).
Buy durable products & consider service agreements for cost-effective repairs.
Avoid disposable products (razors, cameras, pens, etc.).
Avoid buying household products that contain toxic chemicals.
Avoid yard waste by grass recycling and composting.
Use the following waste reducing recipes to avoid creating waste, save money, and eliminate toxic chemicals. (Hint - keep lots of white vinegar and baking soda on hand)
- Clogs -Unclog drains by pouring boiling water with a few tablespoons of baking soda and a large splash of vinegar down drains. This treatment once-a-week prevents clogs.
- Ceramic Tile Cleaner -Mix one-quarter cup of white vinegar with one gallon of water.
- Glass Cleaner -Mix one tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in one quart of water. Spray on and use newspaper to wipe dry.
- Furniture Polish -Mix three parts olive oil with one part lemon juice or vinegar and apply with a clean soft cloth.
- Toilet Cleaner - Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, drizzle with vinegar and scour with a toilet brush.
- Ant Repellant -Wash counter tops, cabinets, and floors with equal parts water and vinegar.
- Roach Repellant -Mix equal parts of oatmeal, flour, and plaster of paris and place in dishes, apply a blend of equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar to infested areas, or sprinkle boric acid around baseboards. (Do not place within reach of children or pets.)
- Reduce waste by eliminating junk mail.

- Americans receive more than four million tons of junk mail every year. Most of the junk mail ends up in our landfill with about 50% not even opened! If 100,000 families stopped unwanted junk mail, 150,000 trees could be saved in one year.
- You can have your name removed from mailing lists by sending a postcard to: Mail Preference Service, Direct Mail Marketing Association, P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008 and ask that your name be removed from the mailing lists being sold to the major mailing list companies. The next time you order from a catalog or send a donation to a non-profit organization, ask them not to sell your name to other companies.
- Rent or Borrow Equipment that is seldom used.
- Look in local telephone directory for equipment rental shops.
